Things to do in Manchester before you're 3

#1 ART CRAWL AT MANCHESTER ART GALLERY

First up, Kate is contributing Manchester Art Gallery as a must-try.

"Let's start with the biggest sell. This is a freebie! And a great place to meet the demands of different ages and abilities. Monty is 8-months old and a demon crawler so the wide open galleries and trail of sensory toys made for excellent exploring opportunities.

There's a massive wall of hooks, discs and all manner of perspex paraphernalia in The Clore interactive studio on the 1st floor that little one's can sort and faff with to their squidgy hand's content. The theme is patterns but the name of the exhibit is 'house-proud' so the idea with the wall is you can make your own art work using the shapes and hooks.
Other parts of the same gallery had scattered lots of soft cushions, blocks and fabrics to explore textures and colours. There was also table for older kids to make their own art work with different coloured paper and various painting and colouring utensils. They can also get fixed up with an explorer tool belt, suitable for children aged three to six.
Outside the museums they have the 'Lost Gardens of Manchester' which has lovely deckchairs and plants where people were sat having coffee in the sun. It's not obviously child friendly but you could do a picnic out there. The cafe is also really nice and they sell wine too :). Very important on an Our Kid day out.
So a winner all round, especially on rainy days if you fancy an alternative to MOSI and Manchester Museum.
Read on for a comprehensive overview of this summer's TAKEOVER workshops, provided by the lovely peeps at Manchester Art Gallery. These events have not been publicised on their website yet so you can thank us later for squirreling secret info for your entertainment pleasures".
Join us this Summer for hands-on activities that explore pattern through texture, colour and sound in creative workshops that use your senses; come and find out what a pattern sounds like, or how you draw a pattern through touch.
Each week we will be inviting an artist to takeover the workshops, adding their own unique spin on the theme of pattern. We are taking inspiration from our award-winning Baby Art Club, Mini Art Club, Open doors and the interactive Clore Art Studio to develop a holiday programme suitable for families with children aged 0-11.
